The Thonet S 40 F Garden Armchair was created by Mart Stam for the manufacturer Thonet, which has been making trend-setting furniture for nearly 200 years.
Mart Stam 1899-1977 was born in the Netherlands but moved to Germany in the 1920s, where he played a key role in the Bauhaus movement. He later enjoyed a distinguished career as an architect and academic, holding posts at the Amsterdam Academy of Arts and Crafts and the Berlin Weissensee School of Art and Design.
First made in 1935 and now reissued in a sensitively updated version, the Thonet S 40 F Garden Armchair features an eye-catching cantilever design which does away with the conventional four-legged arrangement of most previous seating. Instead, a frame made of brushed stainless steel supports the sitter. The seat and backrest are formed from wooden slats which are curved for comfort, as are the wooden armrests. These parts of the chair are all made from Iroko, an African hardwood known for its weather resistant properties. Standing 85cm in height, 56cm in width and with a seat height of 45cm, the Thonet S 40 F Garden Armchair is stackable and equally suitable for indoors and out.
