The transparent Uncle Jim Armchair was created by Philippe Starck for the Italian design label Kartell.
Known for its innovative home and garden furniture, furnishings and lighting, Kartell was founded by Giulio Castelli in 1949. A collaboration with prestigious designers such as Philippe Starck has brought the label global recognition. French-born Philippe Starck is considered to be one of the most influential modern designers, working on everything from kitchen utensils to yachts and hotels. He is known for his stylised, organic creations that make use of unusual materials. His work is exhibited in several museum collections and he has won many prizes including the Excellence in Design Award from the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
The Uncle Jim Armchair, with its ethereal and futuristic appearance, is very characteristic of Philippe Starck's work. The use of transparent high-quality polyethylene moulded in one single piece is an experimental design that creates the illusion that the sitter is hovering in the air. The construction method delivers a durable chair that is tough enough to be used outside as well as indoors. The overall dimensions of the Uncle Jim Armchair are 72 x 103 x 68 cm.
