The Smithfield C LED Ceiling Lamp was designed by Jasper Morrison for the manufacturer Flos.
Based in Northern Italy, this company has been crafting luxury lighting for over half a century, collecting numerous awards along the way including the prestigious Compasso d'Oro. The New York Museum of Modern Art is just one of the many institutions featuring designs by this firm in its permanent collection. Jasper Morrison's elegant yet utilitarian designs have graced everything from bus shelters and trams to kitchen appliances. He was extensively involved in the creation of the Tate Modern, and in 2015, he was the subject of a major retrospective there.
Functionality is one of the hallmarks of Jasper Morrison's work, and this is very much apparent in the design of the Smithfield C LED Ceiling Lamp from Flos. Measuring 60 x 21.5 cm, it consists of an aluminium base supporting a lampshade of opalescent acrylic glass with a glossy finish. Its smooth contours allow it to harmonise effortlessly with a range of different settings, while its proportions and choice of materials create a pool of light that's wide and strong without being glaringly bright. The result is an overhead light ideal for picking out kitchen islands, breakfast bars and counters.
