Collections and world-famous products

Iittala has been consistently producing its great design classics for more than 70 years. It’s not just true connoisseurs of the label who will recognise the wave-shaped Alvar Aalto vase, which is mouth-blown and is one of the most famous glass objects in the world. Today it is synonymous with Finnish glass art and the manufacturer Iittala. Thanks to years of experience, it’s no surprise that the vase stands out with its excellent finish, splendid brilliance of colour and elegantly curved lines.

Collections old and new

The Kastehelmi glass series, for example, has been re-imagined after 20 years and its renewed success just shows the timeless design style of Iittala products. The Taika tableware also looks typically Nordic. The decoration evokes the vastness of the Finnish forests and their mythical creatures, adorning the geometrically simple cups, plates and bowls. Imaginative design meets minimalist forms, creating an exciting contrast. The Teema tableware collection, which was designed by Kaj Frank for Iittala in 1952, is much more purist. A success story from the south of Finland

Iittala is the name of the village in the south of Finland where the company founder, Peter Magnus Abrahamsson – who is in fact Swedish – comes from. In 1881 he named his glass factory after this place. Initially dedicated to traditional glass art and processing, the company specialised in crystal glass in the following years. From the 1930s onwards, Iittala produced simpler and primarily ornament free glassware. At a time when the whole world was singing the praises of the industrial revolution, the Finnish company began working with Alvar and Aino Alto. Their designs, which you can still buy today at AmbienteDirect, are characterised by natural, organic shapes. They would soon go on to achieve world fame. With the Alvar Aalto Vase from 1936, Iittala reinvented Finnish glass art and, with the modern designs of the Aaltos, it went beyond the success of traditional crystal glass.
