Knot Chair

The Knot Chair was designed by Japanese seating expert Tatsuo Kuroda for the Danish label Normann and is an intriguing, strikingly original piece of contemporary furniture.

Born in 1983, Kuroda hails from the island of Hokkaido and is heavily influenced by traditional Japanese carpentry. Focusing on creating naturally flowing, sinuous forms, his chairs and lamps have a minimalist streak as well as the elegance that's characteristic of classical Japanese design.

The Knot Chair features an interlinked lattice of ash and beech elements, which are "knotted" together by fine meshes of painted paper yarn. The result is a solid construction that has a wonderfully organic, natural feel.

Each chair measures 58.5 x 72 x 50.5 cm and has a seat height of 43cm, giving it a comfortable low profile that will slide neatly underneath garden and living room tables. Wherever you choose to deploy it, the Knot Chair will look the part, and can be combined effectively with Kuroda's other designs in the Normann range.

With its use of natural materials, pared-down design and attractively arranged wooden supports, the chair is as well suited to modern interiors as it is to conservatories or cafe settings.
