The striking e15 Backenzahn ST04 Side Table was designed by Philipp Mainzer for the manufacturer he co-founded e15.
An executive member of the German Design Council, Mainzer is fast becoming one of the rising stars of design in his home country. However, his inspirations are truly international, drawn in part from his product design training at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and his architechtural practice in New York.
Here, the e15 Backenzahn ST04 Side Table reveals two of his characteristic traits: a touch of surprising irony - "Backenzahn" literally means "back tooth" - and a love of quality materials. Mainzer clearly relishes the graining and heft of the oak and nut-wood, but the finish and the simplicity of line are refined rather than rustic and the pleasing shape seems to work perfectly in any number of interior styles. At 27 x 47 cm, it fits easily into even a compact room setting and stands naturally at armchair height - it's just the right size for a good book and a glass of something to savour. A note of caution, though: children love it, so you may find it adopted as a favourite stool!
