Discover unique furniture creations by HAY

Scandinavian furniture design is known and loved around the world, and HAY is no exception. Although this Danish label is still young, it has long since conquered our hearts. Its philosophy is to offer high-quality furniture at a fair price and to use well-known masterpieces as inspiration for its contemporary designs. Read here to learn more about this manufacturer, including its affiliated designers and much more. Of course you can also browse and order HAY furniture online at AmbienteDirect.

What makes this brand so special?

Fun and passion:
Company founder Rolf Hay had no special connection to furniture as a child. This interest only developed when he came to Germany after completing his school-leaving exams – and is now stronger than ever. Rolf Hay designs furniture with a unique passion. Of course, this also applies to the designers with whom the label collaborates. Their joy of creating is reflected in all HAY furniture, which is friendly, aesthetic and functional.
Diversity:
The Danish company offers a wide range of products. In addition to chairs, armchairs, sofas and tables, HAY also offers textiles such as bed linen and rugs. There is even a range of HAY accessories, including document folders and clothes hanger sets, which you can also buy at AmbienteDirect.

The essence of HAY?

The goal of HAY is to breathe new life into Danish furniture from the 1950s and 1960s. During this period, Denmark was considered the world leader in designer furniture. In addition, the look, comfort and price must also be right – this is especially important to Rolf Hay. Find out more about him and the other creative minds behind this prestigious brand.

About the founder

Contrary to expectations, Rolf Hay's first brush with classic Danish designer furniture didn't take place in his home country. He actually discovered it at the IMM furniture fair in Cologne, Germany. He was working in a Danish pine furniture store in Hanover, which was why he visited the exhibition in the first place. Rolf Hay was so enthusiastic about the designer furniture from his home country that he wanted to find out all about it. Peter Biehl, the former agent for the designer furniture brand Montana, became his tutor. Rolf Hay's journey then led him to the design companies Gubi and Paustian in Copenhagen, where he continued his apprenticeship. He also met his future wife at Gubi – the couple now manages the creative side of the business, while the commercial aspects are the responsibility of Troels Holch Povlsen, owner of the successful Danish fashion brand Bestseller. Hay and Povlsen first met on a job furnishing a house. Chance, luck or destiny? Povlsen liked Rolf Hay's interior design ideas so much that he was determined to establish a furniture brand with him. In 2002, they founded the company HAY in Horsens, Denmark. Just one year later, the first HAY furniture collection was presented at IMM in Cologne. Rolf Hay's interior designs reflect the essentials; designer names and a holistic concept are less important to him. Instead, he largely focuses on the products themselves, which should be comfortable, durable and affordable – simply made for people!

The brand collaborates with these designers

Of course, visual appearance also plays an important role for the founder of HAY. It doesn't matter to him whether a good design comes from an established star designer like Ronan Bouroullec or a young no-name talent. If the design object is well-made, comfortable and affordable, it becomes a HAY product – regardless of who created it. Discover furniture from various designers in our online shop, for example:

Classic products you really should know about

From furniture to accessories, HAY offers almost everything you need for a successful interior design:

Chairs
Armchair
Sofas
Stool
Tables
Lights
Huge range of outdoor furniture
And much more

Anyone who gets to know this Danish company will discover numerous famous creations. Some of its products are already true designer classics:

DLM Side Table
Nobody Chair
Blow Lounge Chair
Pinocchio Rug
And many more

There is lots to discover in the AmbienteDirect product range, including interior fittings, outdoor furniture, lamps and decorative designer pieces from the HAY brand. In addition, you will get to know its stylish collections and promising partnerships:

Copenhague collection:
The brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec designed a series of tables and chairs for HAY in 2012. This furniture is characterised by reduced lines, everyday designs and inviting looks – sprinkled with an original, premium character.
About a Chair collection:
Created by Hee Welling, this series is already a classic. The designer has reinterpreted the shell chair with a focus on simplicity and diversity. There is a matching frame and the right colour for every occasion.
Wrong for HAY:
The company's design collaboration with Sebastian Wrong is unique – this artist brings a breath of fresh air from London. His designer lamps, furniture and textiles for HAY are contemporary, creative and honest.

By the way, anyone planning a trip to Denmark can admire the furniture brand's collections and products at HAY House. This duplex building acts as a showroom and reflects the Scandinavian label's down-to-earth style. It mixes traditional and modern elements, foregoes a shop window and makes up for this with a welcoming and appealing atmosphere. The company also has its own stores worldwide. In addition, the HAY designer pieces are distributed by various dealers, including AmbienteDirect.
