Enzo Catellani is the creative mind behind Catellani & Smith – something that can be felt not only in the design of every single lamp, but also in the story behind the factory’s name itself. The Catellani & Smith lamp factory based in Villa di Serio near Bergamo, Italy, is said to have been founded by creative mind Carlo Catellani and architect Logan Smith. We now know to take this story with a pinch of salt: Catellani represents Enzo Catellani – Carlo is actually his father, who he spontaneously immortalised in the company name. And Logan Smith was actually his racehorse – making the factory name a humorous anecdote that perfectly complements Enzo Catellani’s playful nature and mission to develop unique designer lamps – a promise that Catellani & Smith has kept to this day.

Every single Catellani & Smith lamp is as individual as can be. Catellani & Smith products are manufactured in detail by hand and there is always only a limited number of design objects. This also makes the lighting objects by Catellani & Smith so highly coveted.

Contrary to many other lighting manufacturers every Catellani & Smith lamp has a very special meaning. The inspiration for the very first Catellani & Smith collection “Oggetti senza tempo” the two light designers got from Alberto della Luce and his tree of light. Thus, the arms of the Sottovento 21 floor lamp – adjustable in every direction – remind us of the branches of a tree waving in the wind.

The company Catellani & Smith was also inspired by other spectacles of nature. The “Stchu Moon” collection is dedicated to the moon and its mystical luminosity. With the most famous Catellani & Smith collection “Fil de Fer” both designers wanted to represent the celestial bodies. The lamps are made of aluminium wire.
