The Finnish label Artek was founded in 1935 by four young idealists, Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl. One of the main ideas at Artek is never to be fully satisfied with the results. The creative minds behind the studio are always looking for new materials and innovative construction methods for their Artek Stool, Artek lamps, trays and place mats. That these were based on the ever popular bold designs of Alvar Aalto and belonged to one of the most popular installation series was obvious when Artek Studio celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2010. With the acquisition of the rights to Ilmari Tapiovaara’s designs, the design studio expanded its range once again.
