The Tea Rex Kettle was developed by Michael Graves for the manufacturer Alessi.
For almost a century, this illustrious Italian firm has kept abreast of the latest trends and technological achievements, working with a rollcall of top international design talent. Based in New Jersey, Michael Graves 1934-2015 was one of the United States' best known 20th century architects; he was the creator of skyscrapers, museums, hotels, public libraries and resorts as well as flagship buildings for some of America's most famous brands. During the latter part of his career, he was equally celebrated for his quirky and memorable designs for domestic products.
In 1985, Michael Graves introduced the 9093 kettle, Alessi's bestselling ever design. Standing 22.5cm in height and 22cm in width, the Tea Rex Kettle is a playful updating of this classic piece, created to mark its 30th anniversary. The polyamide plastic bird whistle of the standard version is replaced with a dragon - the Chinese symbol of good luck - that sits alongside an ergonomic handle in a complementary hue. Otherwise, the piece retains the clean conical lines of the original, formed from polished stainless steel. Also available from AmbienteDirect is a variant with a dragon in a metallic finish.
