HAY
The Dane Rolf Hay did not first come into contact with Danish design furniture classics in his home country, as one might expect, but in Germany at a furniture exhibition in Cologne. He was working in Hanover in a shop for Danish furniture made of pine wood and therefore visited the exhibition in Cologne. Rolf Hay was so taken with the design objects from his home country that he decided to engage himself in Danish design.
He found his mentor in Peter Biehl, former agent for the design furniture brand “Montana”. Rolf Hay continued his apprenticeship in the design companies Gubi and Paustian in Copenhagen. There he was so lucky to meet a special customer, for whom he wanted to design the entire interior of a house. This customer was Troels Holch Povlsen, owner of the successful Danish fashion brand “Bestseller”. Troels Holch Povlsen liked Hay's ideas for interior designs so well, he wanted to launch a furniture brand with him. And this is how Rolf Hay and Troels Holch Povlsen founded the company HAY in Horsens, Denmark, in the year 2002. The first HAY furniture collection was presented one year later at the IMM in Cologne, Germany.
It is HAY's goal to breathe new life into the Danish furniture from the 1950s and 1960s, for it is exactly during this period that Denmark was known as the country with the best designer furniture. Besides being well designed the HAY products were also supposed to be affordable. And here Rolf Hay did not think it important, if a great design came from an established star designer or a young, talented “no name”. If the design object is well produced, the price is favourable, and the piece of furniture is comfortable, it becomes a HAY product, no matter who the designer is.
