The career of the world-famous architect and designer
Saarinen comes from Kirkkonummi, Finland. He was born in 1910 as the son of the famous architect Eliel Gottlieb Saarinen. In 1923, the family emigrated to the US. Once in the US, Eero Saarinen studied sculpture, furniture design and architect. He then worked in his father’s architecture firm, which he took over after his dad passed away. In 1941 together with his friend Charles Eames, he won the “Organic Design in Home Furnishings” competition. The tables, the cupboard expansion system and the gently curved plywood shell armchair by the two designers won awards. In the following years, he worked with Knoll International a great deal.
