The S 34 N Cantilever Armchair was designed by Mart Stam for the brand Thonet.
German-Austrian master carpenter Michael Thonet established his namesake brand in the 1830s. His company was one of the first furniture manufacturers to use factories, changing the industry for ever. He won numerous awards for his designs and some of his pieces are still mass-produced today. Dutch designer and architect Mart Stam played a leading role during the Bauhaus era. He is well-known for designing the first cantilever chair - a chair with no back legs in 1927. At the time, users described the surprisingly comfortable chair as like 'sitting on air'.
The S 34 N Cantilever Armchair epitomises the simple, pared-down look of the Bauhaus style. Made with a chromed tubular steel frame, the back and seat are created using plastic mesh fabric. The result is a very lightweight chair that is easy to move around. Other materials are available in the same range. With its minimalist look, the S 34 N Cantilever Armchair fits well in a modern kitchen, living room or office space. The seat height is 45.5cm, which is ideal for comfortable dining. Gliders are available separately if needed to protect flooring.
