The MR 516/1 Side Table was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for the brand Thonet.
Thonet was a talented master carpenter who launched his furniture business in late 19th-century Germany. The introduction of mass production for furniture and the use of tubular steel brought 20th-century success. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was an influential designer within the Bauhaus and Modernism movements. His work is now widely exhibited in museums such as MoMA in New York.
The MR 516/1 Side Table is a collection of tables that reworks a design classic first issued in the late 1920s. The four legs are formed of two curved tubular steel pieces which are chrome-plated finish. The intersections of the tubular steel add both stability and visual strength to the design, which is completed with a circular tabletop formed of glass. There is also an optional lower glass shelf. With its striking appearance and compact size, this side table fits neatly into living rooms and hallways or can be used for display in offices and public areas. The MR 516/1 Side Table measures 38cm in height and 70cm in diameter.
