EMECO

In 1944, Emeco was founded by Wilton Carlyle Dinges in Hanover, Pennsylvania. Emeco stands for Electric Machine and Equipment Co., and under this brand Dinges focussed on the skills of local craftsmen. During the Second World War, the US government gave Emeco the order to design chairs that were lightweight but stable, water and salt air resistant and therefore suitable for military purposes.

Wilton C. Dinge’s choice for the material that met all of these properties was made quickly: The chairs were to be made of aluminium. And the name was soon found: Emeco gave the chair the number 1006, but it was also known after its original purpose, the Navy Chair.

Bring Thanks to the material used in the Navy Chair by Emeco, it weighed only 3.2 kilograms. Meanwhile, there are also numerous variants of the Navy Chair. Since 2009 the Coca Cola 111 Navy Chair chair also in plastic, has been made from 111 Coca Cola bottles and different colours. Recycling at its best.

That only the best is good enough also reflects the Emeco company's philosophy further: Quality is never an accident. It is not surprising that at Emeco all products are made by hand. Machines only support the work process, polishing a chair, for example, is done entirely by hand. Emeco also uses up to 80 percent recycled aluminium for the production of the Navy Chair. Thus, each of Emeco’s chairs is unique!

In addition to the classic Navy Chair, which is also available as a chair with armrest, Emeco produces other chairs and models: The Navy swivel chair is the modified version of the Navy Chair for the office, helpfully with wheels and also made of lightweight aluminium. The comfortable Hudson Rocking Armchair, a rocking chair, in a futuristic look, was designed for Emeco by Philippe Starck in 2000.
