The Eames Plastic RAR Rocking Chair Upholstered was designed by Ray and Charles Eames for the renowned company Vitra.
Vitra was founded in Switzerland in 1950 by Willi and Erika Fehlbaum, and began manufacturing furniture in 1957. The licensed furniture it made for the European market was created by established American designers such as George Nelson and Ray and Charles Eames. A married couple who worked in the fields of architecture, furniture, fine art and graphic and industrial design, the contributions the Eames' made to design won them numerous awards throughout their lifetimes.
The plastic chairs they created over the years have become iconic and made their name synonymous with modern design and comfort. The RAR (Rocking Armchair Rod Base) attracted attention as soon as it was released, due to its organic shape and unique base. The Eames Plastic RAR Rocking Chair Upholstered has a plastic seat shell moulded to the contours of the human body with a polyurethane foam padding, upholstered and attached with a welted edge. Underneath the seat is a wire base with cross struts connected to solid runners fashioned from strong Polish maple, guaranteeing smooth rocking for many years.
