The Eames Fiberglass Armchair LAR Black Base was designed by Charles and Ray Eames for the brand Vitra.
If furniture had its own "Hall of Fame", the Eames chair would hold pride of place. In 1950 this husband and wife team created a style and technique which is instantly recognisable 70 years later. Today's reintroduced LAR model is truthful to the original concept, taken from photographs rediscovered in the Vitra archive. The initials stand for Low (L) Height, Arm (A) Chair on Rod (R) Base. Unsurprisingly, it became more popularly known as the 'Cat's Cradle'.
Said to have been one of Charles and Ray Eames' favourite designs, the chair certainly featured in their own California home. This new model of the Eames Fiberglass Armchair LAR Black Base uses a fibreglass moulded shell, replacing the original plastic, on top of a criss-cross base made of stainless steel. With a seat height of 25.5cm, its low-slung look makes it a stand-out item of furniture which can be matched with other Eames designer pieces or placed on its own as a distinctive addition to the living room or bedroom. It is both lightweight and compact so can be moved easily.
