The Nesso Table Lamp has been created by Giancarlo Mattioli for the brand Artemide. The 1960s lamp continues to shine not only light but also as the epitome of a 'modern classic'. It has continued to hold its own because of its futuristic design that was decades ahead in the 60s'.
The Nesso Table Lamp has a dome-shaped shade with a round indent in the middle. It conceals a diffuser that casts a soft, diffused light. It is held up by a cone-shaped stem with a round base. The shade is all one piece. This was made possible by a manufacturing process known as injection moulding. ABS thermoplastic was poured into a mould and it sets as a single piece that takes the shape of the mould. Back then, the process was a marvel and it opened the door to the use of this plastic and the manufacturing process for making many other household items.
The Nesso Table Lamp has a height of 34cm and a diameter of 54cm. Its base has a diameter of 21cm. It comes in neutral and bright colours. Its production material and method were a first back in the 60s and it earned the lamp a place in the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art permanent collections.
