The Ikono Suspension Lamp Small was designed by Simon Legald for the manufacturer Normann.
Since founding the company back in 1999, Jan Andersen and Poul Madsen have expanded their range into homeware and furniture, while always keeping a simplicity and warmth - Madsen describes it as a "kindness" - at the heart of their design process and the products they develop. There's a particular affinity between Normann and Simon Legald, the creator of the Ikono Suspension Lamp Small. A graduate of Copenhagen's school of fine art, Legald was also the company's first in-house designer.
Legald describes his approach as "working with simplicity", highlighting the necessities rather than hiding them. The triple-nested shades of the lamp are an audacious design touch, but they're there to provide a clear, even and atmospheric light. The varied uses of steel in its construction present an imaginative contrast and also keep manufacturing simple. At only 17c x 20 cm, the lamp is eye-catching alone but also works brilliantly as part of a wider interior arrangement - try them in a cluster at variable heights or arranged in a row to illuminate and accentuate a table or room feature.
