The Cyborg Ply Armchair was designed by Marcel Wanders for the Italian manufacturer Magis, which has been pushing the boundaries of luxury home furnishings since 1976.
Dutch designer Wanders has worked for a broad range of top international brands, including jewellers and sports labels as well as furniture companies. Throughout his career, his pieces have been defined by their astute combinations of high and low tech, of new materials with traditional silhouettes.
The same enduring concerns are at work in the Cyborg Ply Armchair from Magis. Just as a cyborg is a mixture of flesh and metal, so this chair is a seamless blend of plastic and wood. The seat and legs are formed out of air-moulded polycarbonate, while the backrest is made from ash. Standing 78 cm in height and 53.5 cm in width, with a seat height of 46 cm, the Cyborg Ply Armchair has the modest proportions and shape of a standard domestic wooden chair, but the interplay of natural and synthetic materials gives it a fresh, modern impact that ensures it will be quite at home in the most up to date of kitchens or dining areas.
