The Womb Chair Relax Leather Frame Chrome was designed by Erno Saarinen for the brand Knoll International.
In 1938, Hans Knoll founded his furniture company, Knoll International, in the US. From the outset, his manufacturing ethos followed that of the Bauhaus School of Design in Germany, of creating pure and functional forms to fit unobtrusively into the homes of his clients. Eero Saarinen's designs are perfectly in keeping with the Knoll ethos, being elegant pieces based on natural forms and devoid of unneeded ornamentation.
Saarinen designed the Womb Chair Relax Leather Frame Chrome in 1947. Covered in leather Volo VOBLK, the uterine form of the chair is moulded into one piece, into which a cushion and backrest are fitted. This form, which is comfortable to sit upon and pleasing to the touch, rests upon an unobtrusive chrome frame, with legs slanted to add structural strength. The entire unit measures 105 x 92 x 94 cm, with a seat height of 43.5cm. The chair lends a readily apparent solidity to the corner of any sitting room or parlour. For extra effect, team it with its matching footstool.
