The Nelson Cigar Crisscross Bubble Suspension Lamp M was designed by George Nelson for the brand HAY.
Active from the 1930s until the 1980s, Nelson was a major American designer and a pioneer of democratic modernism. He gained worldwide fame for lighting designs which evoked clouds, airships and - at times - flying saucers, while fusing European design concepts with the everyday efficiency and can-do attitude of the USA. Now available from Danish label HAY, the Nelson Cigar Crisscross Bubble Suspension Lamp M is a great example of how inspirational Nelson could be.
As the name suggests, this is a suspension lamp and it hangs from a 183cm cord. At its heart, Nelson has added a bubble-style diffuser made from lightweight and translucent polymers which permits light to escape while keeping glare to a minimum. The shade measures 53.5cm tall by 33cm across at its widest point, so it's large enough to be a central fixture in large rooms. Imaginatively constructed and featuring a visually striking pattern of angles and folds, it will serve as an impressive lighting option for homes or offices. Wherever it is used, the lamp will attract attention and provide optimal illumination.
