The A1965 Suspesion Lamp was designed by Paavo Tynell for the brand Gubi. The late Tynell was a Finnish lighting accessories designer whose ingenuity earned him the title of 'the man who illuminated Finland'. Tynell was the chief designer for Finland's pioneer lighting fixtures company. The company was started at the beginning of the 20th Century when electricity was becoming commonly available. This and the unique, inimitable designs that Tynell created made him widely successful in Finland and throughout Europe.
The A1965 Suspesion Lamp is one of the designer's creations that proved particularly successful. It was unveiled in 1947 at the Finland House in New York and remains widely popular today. It has a number of Tynell's signature touches, including a novel lifting mechanism that makes the height adjustable, a perforated design element and the use of polished brass. This lamp gently diffuses light downwards, passing it through frosted glass which eliminates glare and casts a soft light. It has a diameter of 18.1cm, a height of 10.2cm and a cord that is 149.6cm long. The A1965 Suspesion Lamp demonstrates Tynell's unique way of turning everyday items into exquisite, functional accessories.
