The A809 Floor Lamp was designed by Alvar Aalto for the brand Artek.
Artek was founded in 1935 in Helsinki by four pioneering young designers. They published a design manifesto stating their aim "to sell furniture and to promote modern culture of habitation by exhibitions and other means. The company has always championed cutting edge technology and is innovative in its use of materials while maintaining an artful simplicity. Alva Aarto is a Finnish architect and artist who is committed to treating every piece he designs as a work of art.
The A809 Floor Lamp is supported by a brass pedestal and stand, with the base and much of the brass covered in leather. The lampshade is made of white steel. It comprises three cones ringed by concentric circles layered on each other and hand-riveted together. Two of the cones, with the wider ends, face upwards, and the third has the wider end facing downwards. Each of the cones has its own bulb and its own pull cord switch. The steel of which the shade is constructed has been sprayed white. The A809 Floor Lamp is 168cm tall and 57cm wide. The energy-efficient halogen bulbs that fit the lamp must be ordered separately.
