The 406 Armchair was designed by Alvar Aalto for the brand Artek .

Alvar Aalto was one of Artek's creators when it was launched in Finland in 1935. He masterminded an approach to design that blends form with functionality. As well as creating furniture, Aalto also designed many of Finland's iconic buildings. During his long career, he won many awards including the Finnish Royal Gold Medal. The Alvar Aalto Medal was created in his honour.

The simple curved outline of the 406 Armchair combines elegance with comfort. The frame has armrests that flow into legs and are formed from a single piece of birch split in half. This ensures that the chair maintains its shape as it ages. Breathable linen webbing is stretched tightly across the seat frame. This provides strength and stability while conforming comfortably to the shape of the body. The linen webbing is available in a choice of colours and can easily be replaced, adding to the chair's sustainability. This is a piece of furniture that works well in living rooms and bedrooms as well as in public spaces. The 406 Armchair measures 60 x 87 x 72 cm.
