DRIADE
Designer furniture and outdoor garden furniture by Driade are distinguished on the one hand by their functionality as objects of everyday use, but especially by their decorative, extravagant design. The company Driade always puts great value on the aesthetics of their furniture and connects all imaginable aspects of living in their collections.
The Italian design furniture label Driade was founded in Piacenta in the year 1968 by Enrico Astori, as manager of the company, his wife Adelaide Acerbi, as creative communications designer, as well as his sister Antonia Astori, as architect and product designer. Besides creating designer furniture and designer accessories for indoors, Driade especially specialised on outdoor and garden furniture.
Since its founding Driade has done project work in cooperation with external designers to bring new inspiration to the firm and realise a wide spectrum of design ideas. The innovative designs' focus was mainly on the versatility, variability, cultural diversity and curiosity, as well as on a perpetual element of surprise. Already as early as in the founding years the label Driade worked with world-renowned designers for their exclusive designer garden and outdoor furniture, among them Rodolfo Bonetto and Enzo Mari. In recent years other famous designers joined their ranks, like Philippe Starck, Ron Arad, Ross Lovegrove, and Mario Bellini.
In order to organise their conceptional demands in a manageable and comprehensible system the company Driade created four special sections for the brand: “Driade” (furniture systems and furniture collections), “Driade Chef” (kitchen and dining room), “Driade Kosmo” (lighting and accessories), and “Driade Store” (seating and individual furniture).
The latter segment, the so-called young designer furniture line, exists since the mid-1990s and targets a younger, more price-conscious audience. Practical and shapely designer furniture for indoors and great designer garden and outdoor furniture, that show their innovation in the details, are the objects made of mostly synthetic materials by Driade. Famous plastic chairs, from the first plastic chair Lord Yo by Philippe Starck for Driade Store to the ambitious “Out/In” collection by Driade Store in collaboration with Eugenie Quitllet, are the young designer furniture line's trademark.
Besides the production of designer furniture – for indoor furniture as well as garden and outdoor furniture – Driade takes on commissions worldwide for exclusive object exhibitions. In the year 2006/07 the museum for modern art Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, Germany, even dedicated an entire exhibition to the famous design company – with the motto “Il Cosmo Driade – The Driade Cosmos”.
